Fragment of a Woman

Early Byzantine

Not on view

Darting a glance to the left, this haloed woman tilts her head. The fine shading and contours of her face are exquisitely modeled in brown, black, and beige threads. On her left ear, a gold and pearl earring appears to sway. Her luxurious jewelry is similar to the examples on view in this gallery. This small fragment once belonged to a larger textile, and the figure likely belonged to a colonnade of mythological characters, perhaps companions in a Dionysian entourage. The woman resembles the painted image of the goddess of prosperity (on view in this case), demonstrating the continuity of a classical tradition.
