Autumn Harvest

Qian Songyan Chinese

Not on view

This fan painted during the war years reflects the poignancy that traditional subjects, such as flowers, butterflies and vegetables, acquire in times of distress. Ch'ien's inscription reads:

The field and garden have gone
uncultivated since the war.
Where can we find enough food for this
year of famine?
I often think of the late autumns in the
peaceful past.
The fragrant bean and luscious fruit were
cheap.

Ch'ien Sung-yen succeeded Fu Pao-shih as director of the Nanking Painting Academy.
