Phurba Emanation of Padmasambhava

Tibet

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 964

A wrathful manifestation of Padmasambhava, a founding guru of Tibetan Buddhism, is visualized as an anthropomorphic dagger (phurba) used in exorcism rites to destroy dangerous forces. The deity is represented as an emanation of Guru dragmar, the red-faced guru. He is depicted as a wrathful snake-entwined and skull-garlanded deity, emitting an aureole of flames and holding a scorpion.
