Inscription: A long inscription is carved into the base of the sculpture giving the date of 680 and other information. It reads: "Da Tang Yonglong nian shieryue yiri, Wuqing cun Liu Yuxian wei wang guocu wengpo jingzao yixang yichu yuan wang ? sheng tianxian fuyen zhigong yuangxi daiqing". Loosely translated :" On the first day , of the twelfth month of the first year of the Yonglong reign of the great Tang (680), a certain Liu Yuxian of Qingcun village, for the benefit of his male and female ancestors respectfully had made one sculpture that (they) could become immortals and (attain?) states of joy and great clarity"
