The Departure of Saints Paula and Eustochium for the Holy Land
Giuseppe Bottani Italian
Not on view
The Roman noblewomen Saint Eustochium and her mother Paula were disciples of Saint Jerome. Here they are shown leaving for the Holy Land, where they built four monasteries.
The picture was painted in Rome, where Bottani worked with Pompeo Batoni. It is a finished study for Bottani's masterpiece, a large altarpiece commissioned in 1745 for the church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, Milan, and now in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan.
