Jean-Louis-André-Théodore Gericault (1791–1824)

Horace Vernet French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 801

This informal portrait documents the friendship of two of the most promising young painters in Paris in the early 1820s. Vernet captured Gericault's pensive sidelong glance quickly—the broadly painted background and unfinished lower section are indications of the spontaneity with which it was produced. It is possible that at some point Vernet considered incorporating this penetrating character study into a larger, more fully developed portrait composition. A lithograph he produced in 1823 depicts the then fatally ill Gericault full-length, standing in his studio wearing the same head scarf, or fichu.
