Plate with Wife Beating Husband

Netherlandish

Not on view

Like the column figures on Henry Hamlyn’s house, this platter brazenly skewers medieval ideals of gender roles, sex, and marriage for comic effect. It is hard to imagine the plate’s precise function: would it hold food, act as an all-purpose tray, or simply be a novelty to amuse guests?
