Early in his career, Van Dongen exhibited with both Fauvist and German Expressionist painters. Later he became a fashionable society portraitist. This sitter, Yvette Labrousse (1906–2000) won the Miss Lyon beauty contest in 1929 and the Miss France contest in 1930. She subsequently represented France in the 1930 Miss Europe contest held in Paris and the Miss Universe contest held in Rio de Janeiro. In 1944, she married the Sultan Aga Khan III.
