The young men of the Qing royal family were trained in painting and calligraphy through private instruction and study of the imperial collection. In landscape painting, Pu Jin followed the orthodox styles of the Four Wangs, and in calligraphy he cultivated the elegant script of Wang Xizhi and Zhao Mengfu. According to his seal, Pu was in his forties when he painted this work, so it must date after 1933
