Ren Yi won broad acceptance for colorful 19th century populist art, particularly through his influence on Wu Changshuo. His style continues to influence 20th century painting; Zhang Yugong's Cat belongs to this tradition, and as a teacher at the Shanghai Art College, Zhang guaranteed continuation of the line.
