Flying Apsaras (Hiten)

Japan

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 224

This configuration of sculptures—Amida, the Buddha of Limitless Light, flanked by his attendants, Kannon and Seishi, and flying celestials—can be seen in many other artworks. Amida presides over his own paradise, the Western Pure Land, where he welcomes any being who calls his name. His benevolent gaze, directed toward the viewer below, is symbolic of his boundless compassion. He sits upon a lotus pedestal with his hands forming the mudra of meditation. This sculpture was originally worshipped at a temple near Mount Kōya.
