Madura: West Front of the Roya Gopurum

This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.The enormous base of this unfinished gopuram, or gateway, was said to be fifty-seven feet high and buried deeply in the ground. British writers of the period admired the south Indian mastery of stonework and sculpting, praising the skill required to create and erect such massive jambs.
