John VIII Paleologus
Pisanello (Antonio Pisano) Italian
Not on view
The figures shown on horseback in profile and rearview are similarly depicted in the Rotterdam Crucifixion drawing. The medals’ dates suggest that the drawing must have been made after about 1439–40, just prior to Jan van Eyck’s death in 1441. The possible quotation of these medals in the drawing indicates an informed knowledge of developments in Italian medal art and perhaps a privileged connection with current events (in particular, of John VIII Palaeologus at the Council of Ferrara), benefits of Van Eyck’s association with the Burgundian court.
