Synaxarion (Yaysmawurk')

Armenian

Not on view

This synaxarion, or lives of the saints, was produced in Constantinople in 1678 for a church in Cyprus. The illuminations, with their ornate headpieces, marginal designs, and anthropomorphic and zoomorphic letters, were inspired by traditional Armenian manuscripts that were typical of the style of the Constantinopolitan scriptoria of the period. By this date, printed books in Armenian were available, but the first printed synaxarion in Armenian would not be published until 1706.
