Lacquer Cabinet
Not on view
Long in the collection of Louis XIV’s son, the Grand Dauphin, this precious cabinet was possibly among the Siamese gifts that his father distributed to members of the royal family. Japanese-made lacquerware was rare and highly prized in Europe. The French hoped to form a trade alliance with the Siamese, whose three hundred bales of porcelain, metals, lacquers, and other lavish gifts reflected their well-established trade networks with India, Persia, Japan, and China.
