Overcoat
This leather jacket may have been worn by a samurai firefighter in Edo whose home domain was Sanuki, on the island of Shikoku. The jacket was dyed on one side with indigo. The other was colored by exposing the leather to smoke from pine needles or rice straw to obtain a rich brown. The parts that are white were covered with a resist paste before the smoking procedure.
