Gospel Book
Not on view
This manuscript, one of forty-five produced by Mesrop of Khizan, shows Saint John the evangelist with his scribe Prochoros receiving the Word of God. Here, the frenetic energy of divine inspiration, shown as a red, gold, and white amoeboid, has transformed the Cave of the Apocalypse on Patmos, where Saint John receives the Gospel. Such vividly colored evangelist portraits are common in manuscripts from New Julfa, where artists continued the Khizan style of Greater Armenia.
