Miter Lappets
Not on view
These lappets originally extended from a miter, a headdress worn by a catholicos or a bishop in Cilicia. Popes Lucius III and Innocent III, in 1184/85 and 1202, respectively, sent miters as gifts from Rome, and these vestments soon became a standard part of Armenian liturgical dress. Medallions with half-length figures of the Virgin and Saint John the Baptist, the apostles Saints Peter and Paul, and the evangelists Saints John and Matthew, and Luke and Mark appear in pairs on these lappets.
