Omophorion

Armenian

Not on view

The omophorion is worn by ranking prelates during the mass. The five pairs of figures on this textile are identified by inscriptions in Armenian. Mary, Mother of God, and Saint John the Baptist appear above the evangelists Saints Luke and John. Below them are Saints Gregory the Illuminator and Gregory the Theologian of Nazianzus. In the fourth row are the evangelists Saints Mark and Matthew, followed by Saints Stephen and Nicholas.
