Gospel Book

Armenian

Not on view

This Gospel Book is a seventeenth-century copy of the Eight Painters Gospels, completed in 1320 by the famous painter Sargis Pidzak. The deliberate act of copying is a testament to Armenians long-standing interest in their own traditions. From the left, both manuscripts display the Crucifixion; the centurion, Saint John the evangelist, and the swooning Virgin; and dead saints rising from their graves as the temple veil rips open at Christ’s death.

Gospel Book, Text: tempera, ink, and gold on parchment; binding: silver-gilt (?), 10 porcelain medallions; 278 folios, Armenian
