Nettles has been producing autobiographical work since the 1970s, when she became known for her feminist explorations of family life and her experiments with alternative photographic processes. Later in her career, Nettles embraced the form of the artist's book, using photographic images and word-play to address themes such as natural history, aging, and the life of the imagination.
