Giuseppe Garibaldi

Gustave Le Gray French

Not on view

During his photographic campaign documenting the Expedition of the Thousand, Le Gray made a portrait of the legendary general Garibaldi that was subsequently rephotographed and reproduced in a variety of media in Italy and abroad. The sitter’s stern brow and confident pose convey his stature as a strong military leader, while his humble clothes suggest his status as folk hero. Eugène Colliau, one of Le Gray’s students, distributed photographic prints in Paris, which were then translated into woodcuts for the illustrated news weekly Le Monde Illustré. In Italy the images were pirated and published as lithographs. The iconic portrait of Garibaldi also appeared on popular cartes de visite made and circulated throughout Europe and the United States
