Max Ernst French, born Germany
Not on view
Max Ernst first used collage in his work at the end of 1919, taking the process of collage further than anyone else had previously done. He created a unified image from the fragments, unlike the Cubists, and identified them as a single entity on the picture plane. The psychological ramifications of this procedure are enhanced by Ernst’s skillful technique of manipulating his material so subtly that it becomes difficult to discern whether the work is in fact a collage.
