In Wegman’s photographs, videos, and drawings of the late 1960s and 70s, pithy, often humorous actions are staged for the viewer and recorded by photographic medium or simple no. 2 pencils. After a few years in Madison, Wisconsin and Los Angeles, Wegman moved to New York in 1972. The following year, using graphite on clean sheets of typewriter paper, the artist began to draw dozens of amusing, deadpan images. Usually captioned to enforce the humor within them, these works on paper reflect and further illuminate Wegman’s infectious, off-beat sensibility, and form a vital part of his artistic practice, just as the actions and gestures he staged for the camera with his beloved Weimaraner Man Ray.
