In 1848 Henri Le Secq learned the calotype (paper negative) process from the pioneering photographer Gustave Le Gray and soon emerged as an amateur capable of intimate and expressive renderings of architecture, landscapes, and humble still lifes. Le Secq likely made this nature study near his aristocratic family’s home in Montmirail, in northeastern France.
