Enthroned Buddha Preaching

This icon, among the finest metal versions of the enthroned Buddha preserved, displays the classic features of a Dvaravati-style preaching Buddha. The Buddha seated with pendant legs (bhadrasana) appears in mainland Southeast Asia early in the sculptural record, as witnessed by a diminutive bronze icon of the later sixth century (cat. no. 23). The enthroned Buddha is routinely depicted in the mainland, one hand raised in the teaching gesture (vitarkamudra). The presence of this Dvaravati style in Myanmar was the result of its transfer in a Mon-speaking cultural milieu.
