As the author of more than fifty books of popular science and science fiction, Flammarion promoted public interest in astronomy through an eccentric blend of fact and fantasy. A renowned astronomer, he was also a spiritualist who believed that "superior" species of extraterrestrials resided on the moon and on other planets. In 1867 he published a series of twelve celestial cartes de visite, which includes this and another lunar photograph as well as reproductions of drawings of the planets and solar system. With Flammarion’s explanatory texts printed on the backs of the cards, the resulting "gallery" serves as a succinct guide to the galaxy.
