Joyce J. Scott American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774

Joyce Scott is one of the leading craft artists today, working in a combination of jewelry, beadwork, glass and performance. Her work is informed by her African American ancestry and her family’s craft traditions, but also draws upon Native American traditional techniques such as the "peyote" stitch (a method of freeform, or off-loom beading), and West African Yoruba beadwork, within her artistic practice. Moving beyond simple adornment and decoration, she repositions craft and jewelry as a platform for incisive commentary on political and social issues and contemporary life.
