Moss roses are distinctive for the mossy growth on their calyx lobes, hips, and flower stalks. In this dress, they are shown only as buds, the splendid anticipation of full-blown beauty. Sir Walter Scott in Lady of the Lake (1810), wrote, "the rose is fairest when 'tis budding new."
