Lange displays a graphic sensibility in her study of an embroidery sample stitched by a member of the Hutterian Brethren religious sect. A yearlong Guggenheim fellowship brought her to rural settlements like the Hutterite cooperative community in South Dakota. For Lange, the group’s lifestyle and handiwork represented a model of historical perseverance (in their case. surviving through successive periods of exile) that could serve to counter the social displacements of the recent economic catastrophe.
