Fine embroidery with intricate motifs rendered in infinite rows of tiny cross-stitch has long been an important decorative device in traditional Palestinian dress. In the past, Palestinian girls were expected to master the art of embroidery from an early age since, according to one source, "A prospective bride was assessed not only on her general character ... her embroidery was examined and commented upon, for its execution revealed her personality."
