In 1870s America, adherents to a new consumer cult erected unlikely altars. Household staples, stacked high, fill the pages of this business directory. Produced by eminent and enterprising Philadelphia photographers, the book was an advertisement twice over—promoting local merchandise and their own knack for its capture. A maximalist credo informs their approach, evinced by this superabundance of brushes. With its flourish of feathers and bristles, the scene could banish forever the thought of a comb.
