Evening dress

Designer Mark Mooring American

Not on view
Young, fresh, and lyrical is a 1940s American dress draped with strawberries. In the War years, American dress asserted the unpretentious pastoral always ready for picnics and carousels. Like Circus Polka (June 1942), the patriotic and popular-culture collaboration of Stravinsky, Balanchine, Bel Geddes, and the elephants of the Ringling Brother Circus at Madison Square Garden, this dress is an ode to the American summer.
