Basket with Lid

Ada Vilcon Thomas Native American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 746

Individually woven strips of hand harvested, dyed, then split river cane support the double-weave pattern of this small basket and lid. Eye-catching dyes in red, black, and yellow accentuate ancestral weaving designs referencing plants, animals, and local environments. Expressing connections to land and water, time-honored designs offer striking contrast to bold diagonal stripes. On the sides yellow "Alligator Entrails" vertically meander, while tiny animal tracks define the lid shape and sides.
