Degas first registered to visit the print room of the National Library in Paris in 1853. There, he likely made this sheet of tracings from Raimondi’s engravings of frescoes by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. With pen and ink, Degas carefully copied the graphic syntax of the engraved lines but reoriented the figure groups in a way that evokes a more spontaneous sheet of sketches. Manet later took a more radical departure from the same source when he adapted the river gods of the Judgment of Paris (at left here) in his Déjeuner sur l’herbe, as seen in the version hanging nearby.
