Richard Avedon American

Not on view

The composition of the Factory mural, with its complex array of characters, took Avedon months to work out. Warhol’s entourage made many trips to the photographer’s studio, and outtakes from their sittings appear here. Avedon originally planned a fourth mural panel showing a love scene—the culmination of the movie Factory actors and filmmakers were implicitly making—but ultimately cut it to keep the narrative open-ended.
