Painted by Tanomura Chokunyū Japanese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 231

Taking the name of his teacher and brother-in-law Seifū Yohei II in 1880, the maker of these sencha teacups was known for his blue-and-white and white porcelain, along with his stoneware in the Ninsei, Kenzan, and Mokubei styles. As a young craftsman, he had studied painting under Tanomura Chokunyū, who executed the decorative patterns seen on this set. In 1893, Yohei III was appointed Imperial Household Artist.
