Deer amid pines
This serene scene of deer amid pines conveys an idyllic landscape full of auspicious imagery. In Daoism and shamanism, deer are revered as messengers and vehicles, of the gods and deer horn is thought to have medicinal properties. These deer, already distinguished by their auspicious white color, are in a utopian setting of pine and flowering trees, blue-green mountains, streams, and immortal mushrooms under a red sun. With this auspicious messaging, a painting like this would be gifted and displayed for birthdays and other celebratory life milestones. The careful ink brushwork in articulating the landscape features and the controlled and subtle application of color differ from later paintings of the same subject.
