Marbled covered box

Korea

Not on view

Marbling is a technique that coarsely blends clays with different levels of iron to create a decorative pattern—as is evident when one examines the unglazed portions of this covered box. The dynamic swirls of light and dark clay that animate the box are further enhanced by the application of a celadon glaze. Covered boxes of this type would have held cosmetics or ink paste.
