Charango

Marcos Manufactory

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

This unusual instrument combines the basic features of a Spanish guitar with the armadillo-shell back found in indigenous variants like the charango or the jarana. The latter is typical of the Yucatan peninsula, where this small guitar was made in the late 19th century.
