Hanging Lamp

10th–11th century
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 453
The squat body, short flared neck, and low foot of this object are typical of lamps produced before the thirteenth century. The characteristic suspension rings around the bodies of these lamps are another prominent feature. This example probably once had a vertical glass tube attached to its base to float a wick in oil.
