Der Kitano-Tenjin-Schrein in Kyoto ist dem Gelehrten und Staatsmann Sugawara Michizane (845–903) gewidmet. Michizane starb im Exil, nachdem er von seinen Feinden am Hof verleumdet wurde. Infolge starben diese in einer Reihe von Naturkatastrophen und Seuchen. Michizanes Geist eröffnete seinen Wunsch, im Nordwesten der Hauptstadt einen Schrein errichtet zu bekommen. Er wird heute als Shintogott des Lernens und der Kalligraphie verehrt.
