In the tondo, in relief, cast of tetradrachm from Syracuse with head of Arethusa

Syracuse, the most important Greek city in Sicily, issued an extraordinarily beautiful series of coins—silver tetradrachms—from the late sixth through third century B.C. They bore the head of Arethusa, the personification of a famous freshwater spring in the city.
