Bill Owens American

Not on view

Between 1968 and 1972 Owens photographed extensively in three residential communities east of San Francisco. The result was Suburbia – one of the definitive documents of life in the American suburb. Rich in irony, Owens’s photographs describe with a dispassionate yet subtly ironic objectivity the lives of the proud inhabitants who believed that with the ownership of their home they had realized the American Dream.
