Kabul, Afghanistan

Ed Grazda American

Not on view

In 1980 Grazda began a project to document the "holy war" in Afghanistan fought by Mujahedin tribes against the Soviet invasion and the Communist government in Kabul. In this photograph Grazda records a barefoot man from Hazara armed with a Russian missile launcher. The seemingly pleased man effectively represents the success of the Mujahedin, who had just won control of the city after a decade of brutal guerilla warfare. Five years later, after unprecedented factional and tribal fighting, the Taliban militia took control of Afghanistan.
