The Soil vol. 1, no. 5 (July 1917)

For two years beginning in 1916, Robert Coady published the cultural magazine The Soil. It addressed a large range of topics that Coady considered to be strongly anchored in the new urban American identity, including industrial design, early jazz, boxing, and even shop-window displays on Broadway. The journal’s final issue, dated July 1917, features prominently on its cover the Fang reliquary element exhibited at left, indicating both Coady’s admiration for the work itself and the connections he drew between New York’s modernity, black America, and traditional African art.
