Saint Jerome and a Supplicant

A supplicant has interrupted the studies of the fourth-century scholar and ascetic Saint Jerome, who translated the Bible from Hebrew and Greek into Latin. He is identified as Girolamo Agostino Amadi (ca. 1433/35–1507), a silk merchant in Venice. The beautiful landscape background resembles the surroundings of Piero’s native Sansepolcro. As one eminent scholar noted, "Here men and saints, equal in their landscape surroundings, meet and establish a rustic familiarity, the significance of which is immersed in the spectacle of the hot afternoon."
