Incense Burner

Algunas piezas españolas revelan las filiaciones religiosas de los artistas y mecenas responsables de su creación, pero en otros casos las respuestas no son tan evidentes. Este incensario, un objeto que los historiadores de arte suelen clasificar como «islámico», no presenta, de hecho, ningún simbolismo religioso. La cajita de marfil, que probablemente servía para guardar los santos óleos empleados en el ritual cristiano, está decorada con escenas de la historia de Salomón, al que veneraban por igual cristianos, judíos y musulmanes, lo que plantea dudas sobre la autoría y el uso de este objeto.







Some Spanish objects reveal the religious affiliations of the artists and patrons behind their creation, but for other works the answers are not so clear. This incense burner, an object typically classified by art historians as "Islamic," in fact displays no religious symbolism. The little ivory box, thought to be a container for sacred oil used in Christian ritual, is decorated with scenes from the story of Solomon, a figure revered by Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike—raising questions about who made and used this object.
