Mantle Clock
Movement by Joseph Juhel French
Case by François Caranda French
Not on view
Caranda, established in the town of Versailles in 1778, supplied "four altered clocks" for the palace apartment of Gustav III of Sweden. He reused movements from earlier timepieces stored at the Royal Furniture Repository and fitted them in modern cases. Intended for Gustav’s cabinet, or small private room, this example is decorated with bronze figures symbolizing the Union of the Arts.
