Exterior View of the Royal Chapel
Not on view
Living in Paris and Versailles in the 1750s, Bellotti, a nephew of the famous Venetian painter Canaletto, exhibited various views he claimed to have painted on-site. This particular work, however, is based on an engraving (by Jacques Rigaud, published in Diverses vues du château de Versailles). The painting shows the palace grounds open to visitors, who enliven the composition, some arriving in sedan chairs.
